Age related colour changes

Post by Malakai10 »

So, I was inspired by a mixture of this topic, ADHD and insomnia to record age related changes in coat colour. This will likely take a long time to complete as it's more of a side project.

These links will also have been used as a reference.

Note: in this topic, 'dilutions' will refer to dun, cream, pearl, champagne and silver.

Chestnut, Flaxen and Dilutions
Base:

Flaxen:

Champagne:

Cream:

Double Cream:

Dun:
0 years: notice how non-grey foals appear mealy (lighter area around eyes, muzzle, belly and legs.) Note how the mane, tail, tip of the years and top of the back are a bright, red colour and how the body is significantly lighter, but still darker than the mealy areas. This is an indication of red dun. The colt is also tiger eyed, hence the light eyes.
Image
1,13 years: the mealy areas have darkened to the same red as the mane and tail. The body has also darkened, but only slightly. The body colour change seems to be more of an increase in colour saturation. The body has also gotten shinier, due to the training the horse has been in (note that the increase in shininess is due solely to training - it is not age related.) Note the dark patches on the neck and hindquarters. All red areas have darkened slightly.
Image
3 years: rate of colour change has slowed down. There is only a subtle change between the ages of 1,13 and 3. Notice how the grey patches have darkened.
Image
Notice the faint striping on the right ear. Also note that the face is nowhere near as shiny as the body - this indicates that the horse is not metallic.

Pearl:

Silver:
  • Silver requires at least one extension (black) gene in order to appear; as such, it does not appear on chestnut (although it may be interesting to conduct a study to see if there are in commonalities in chestnut silver carriers.)

Pangaré (Mealy), Sooty, Tiger Eye, Metallic
Metallic:
  • So far, has not been shown to express any age-related colour change.
Pangaré:
Sooty:
Tiger Eye:
  • Does not cause colour change. It should be noted, however, that two copies of the gene are required in order for the colour to be expressed - with the exception of champagne, which requires one copy. Champagne foals may be mistakenly thought to be tiger eyed due to having blue eyes at birth - however, this is a characteristic of champagne and the eyes will darken as the foal ages.

Grey
Grey foals are born the colour that the horse would be as an adult, were it not grey. The exception with this is sooty - sooty is not expressed on grey foals, or, if it is, is expressed minimally.

Most, if not all, greys become fleabitten; the age at which the become fleabitten is determined by genetics. A horse will normally be fully greyed out before fleabites begin to appear. The contrast of fleabites (size and colour) to the grey of the coat can also vary. Occasionally, one will find a horse that obtains fleabites before it has fully greyed out or a horse that never obtains fleabites.
