Rising Star(s)

This one is a mare owned by MintySugarHorse2 that has definitely impressed me both look and performance wise.
Her colouring as well as her mane definitely makes her stand out and what is more impressive is that even if her Breeder's report does not show us much talent she on the other hand has given a few great results not that her driving career started!

Driving-horse Spotlight(s)

I am always impressed by Elaina Brewster's Soviet Heavy Draft line and this particular horse who has been competed almost daily shows great talent!
With a good HGP and an amazing win percentage I see him capable of throwing a few foals with the potential of breaking a world record!

This one looks like a very promising stallion! He has amazing results in multiple disciplines!
Well done Mega! That is a very good stallion you have bred!

Log Pull

News
These are the two horses that were the ones that came closest to breaking a world record!
ImageImage

Rising Star
GCh.++ JB Elias

This 10 year-old Belgian has recently started his career in Log Pull! His win percentage might no be the highest out there but do not let that fool you! His results are one of the best!

Competition Highlight
*** The Royale Log Pull Event *** is a competition that is hosted by Royale Ranch and is running every week! SCh.++ Rh JB Duke of Lug Nut, this world record holder managed to beat the other 7 participants and won the 1st place, earning himself 64 points!

Horse Spotlight
A colt that has been featured many times in this newsletter is :
Real Ride

And now, once again, this stunning North Swedish Horse has managed to take the spotlight again! One of his best qualities being his amazing results that, definitely, make him stand out! In this month Real Ride has been entered in more than 30 competitions, whose results were almost all over 60 feet!

Driven Dressage

News
No world records were broken in 2020 unfortunately, but thankfully that gives plenty of time for new Driven dressage breeders to quickly make their way to the top!

Knabstruppers are a breed that I have seen been favoured in competitions as Silverine has made a bunch of level 10 comps for Knabstruppers! Not only that but the most common number of participants in their competitions are usually around 40! Which means that by placing first you can get around 350 points!

Rising Star
We rarely see Arabians enter driving dressage competitions or, generally, anything related to the driving disciplines. However, this month's rising star is a half Arabian colt !

Butterscotch (EP)

This amazing stallion as of now has a 100 win percentage! Congratulations Lizzybean20 he is one of the few Arabians that are competed in Driven dressage!

Competition Highlight
As mentioned above Knabstruppers are favoured in Driven Dressage competitions thanks to Silverine! So it is no wonder that a Knabstrupper-only driven dressage competition will be featured in this section! Knabstruppers Driven Dressage has 45 entrants and has given the chance to this stallion to win over 350 points!

Horse Highlight

¤ß¥Å¤ Pierce an almost purebred Knabstrupper has managed to catch my eye! Along with other Knabstruppers bred by Silverine this one excells in Driven Dressage! He manages to combine a nice win percentage, with amazing results and beautiful patterns that definitely makes him stand out!

Obstacle Driving

News

Rising Star

This mare definitely deserves this month's spotlight! Even though she has just started her career in Obstacle driving her results of the few competitions she has entered are really good! I see no problem in her becoming a Supreme Master Grand Champion some day!

Competition Highlight
Knabstruppers, yet again, are featured in this section. With the number of participants in this competition it is hardly possible to not notice it. Especially when placing first in this competition will definitely give your horse a champion title!

Horse Spotlight
JB Duke of Lug Nut

This world record holder has been competed daily for the past month! Even if his is not a horse with a huge talent in Obstacle Driving the fact that he manages to do so well in multiple disciplines makes him one of the best Belgians out there!

Marathon Driving

News

ℳℐ Ivory Fortune is one of the Belgians that has come closest to breaking a world record this month! Sired by one of Panka33 world record holders this Belgian seams to have taken from his father aalmost exclusively!

Rising Star

This unnamed Belgian seams to know what he is doing! With results close to 21 penalty points and with already the champion title I am sure that there is a great future ahead of him!

Horse Spotlight

This Belgian world record holder definitely shows talent in Marathon Driving as well! Again, with results close to 21 penalty points I am sure that we will see him break another world record!

Welcome to HWO's Driving Newsletter

Issue #4 - March 27, 2020

Announcements
For the next interim writer term (3 months), our usual writer, Veterinarian will be taking over the Racing Branch. I will be covering this issue this month. Please contact me if you're interested in writing, even if it's just a single month coverage! Contact the newsletter staff here.

Driven Dressage
News
There has been no movement on the record front for Driven Dressage. Remember you're aiming for scores between 55% and 57%.
We still appear to be a bit off of this, but we are gaining ground. Keep Striving! We're getting there!

Rising Star
Today, I bring to you a rising star in the Driven Dressage category. Being slowly raised through the levels, this pseudo-white purebred Friesian is trotting with style through not just driven dressage but also obstacle driving, marathon driving and three other competition styles not covered by this branch. He is a gorgeous, big, 17.2 hand bred by Emiliares and currently owned by Vares.
Allow me to introduce:
Mandalorian

I'm not offering his WPS in any of these, you should take a look at it yourself. Even though he's being slowly brought up through the levels of each, he is still making an impressive showing.

Spotlight
For the spotlight, I offer a horse that has been around for awhile and is still running throughout the driven dressage competitions and throwing his weight around. Many of you should recognize both the breed and maybe even the horse as well (I know some of mine are regularly beaten by this stallion when I test my own stock).
{MM} Lovestruck Dollar

Now the question is, Why do I bring up this particular horse into the spotlight, other than his impressive 97.5% WPS with 120 starts and 93 wins in just this style of competition? Because he is one of the very few that has scores within reach of our world records. In just the past month, he has 21 scores over 50% in driven dressage with three of those scores just over 54%. I offer him to show us a body style that works in this category. And driven dressage isn't even his area of expertise. Congraulations, mora098, for showing us that even the oldies can kick butt!

Log Pull
News
We have another returnee, proving that records are just a walk in the park, even after two years sitting in the back of the barn. JB Duke of Lug Nut has captured levels 4 (twice in a single day) and 5 a day later. He conquered these records on March 7th and 8th. And he still holds the level 3 record, set in 2018. This 18.2 hand, purebred Belgian is still proving that his heavy weight is still one of the top heavy weights in the world (at least here on HWO) and when he gets to throwing it around, his almost 3000 pounds still have the pull it did when he first hit the circuit.
Our current records sit between 64 and 66 feet.

Spotlight
I have a competition for our spotlight this time. RenegadePegasus's ***BGE Heave or Leave*** Lvl 10 Log was stacked on March 8th when it ran with a collection of our top Log Pulling contenders still very active today. Our top 4 pullers all pulled in excess of 60 feet with our top 8 all pulling 55 feet or better. It certainly looks like owner of many of these horses Arny is laying down the gauntlet to the rest of HWO in a rather, 'catch them if you can' style. I am sure that those that breed for Log Pulling has heard the call and is taking up the challenge.

Marathon Driving
News
Our marathon records have not been broken in the past month. Our goal is 20 to 21 penalty points. We're beginning to inch our way within reach. Just a little more and those records will start to shift. Good Luck, HWO, you're within reach!

Spotlight
There are quite a few, both oldies (those that have been in the back of the barns for awhile) and newbies (horses that have been recently bred), that are making their way toward that oh-so-close-I-can-taste-it goal of 21 penalty points that I found myself at a temporary loss in choosing which one to highlight for our community. Such horses like JB Speckle Bellied Tugger which is a bred log pulling specialist (his sire is our log pulling record breaker, JB Duke of Lug Nut), ฿Ⱡ₴ Mocha, another purebred belgian throwing his weight in marathon driving as well as log pulling, and Legend Awakened, this time a purebred friesian all appeared with points closing in on that record goal. And those aren't the only ones. Our competition results are rife with breeders and competitors that are striving to attain that goal.
So now, without further ado, I present to you a simple highlight, rather than a spotlight, to emphasize and offer the style and type of Marathon Driving competition currently involved seemingly the most heavily in this area.
ℳℐ Ivory Fortune

Obstacle Driving
News
Like Marathon Driving, our Obstacle Driving records have not moved in the past month. We appear to be a bit further away from these records than from the marathon driving records, but again, in the past month, I do see a shift toward those scores.
Our goal is 56 to 59.

Spotlight
Like in most of the competitions covered by this branch, Belgian and draft-style horses often reign supreme. But I was able to find one this time that does not share the same body style. He is a 90% Quarter Horse mixed Arabian stallion bred and owned by melanta. Sporting a gorgeous amber champagne coat, this tall, 17.1 hand stud has maintained a WPS in obstacle driving of 97.8% with 93 starts and 51 wins.
SL Relic

He appears to be holding his own against horses that are in some cases bred to 'take it all', yet he's no lightweight, unknown breeding either, his line is stacked with SL Samson, SL Sunchaser and SF Nightmare's Swift America.

Log Pull

I’ll have to admit to some bias when it comes to Log Pull (or as I know it Weight Pulling)! There was two horsey events at the local county fair that I refused to miss in my younger years, Harness Racing and the Weight Pulls. There was always lots of excitement, I remember the Heavy Weight World record being broken in 2003, sadly many of the old timers have retired, since then. How I miss the good ol' days, but enough about reminiscing about the past, let us move on to the current news.

News
The last record for Log Pull was broken on April 20th, 2020, by This flaxen gold champagne leopard Belgian stallion incidentally broke his own level ten record, not just once or twice, but a total of four times in the same amount of days. JB Ballroom Blitzer is bred by JAB and owned by Arny.

Working on their Log Pulling careers; we have Belgians, and Belgians are everywhere it seems. Belgian stallions like JB Dancing Sugar Zealot and JB Hacksaw Jim have been keeping their careers on target with impressive win percentages of over 75%. On occasions we do see a few other breeds like the Soviet Heavy Drafts and Dutch Drafts popping up, but the Belgians do seem to reign supreme in this event. JB and Arny are the names being seen the most consistently, and they have set the bar high...lets see if we get any challengers.

For anyone who might be interested in participating in the Log Pull events, the evaluated states are Strength, Stamina, Movement, Tempo. The horse or pony must be between 9 Inches to 21.3hh to participate.

Horse Spotlight will come from the top placings in the HWO Log Pull Spotlight event.
The horse I have choosen to spotlight is This big flaxen gold champagne leopard Belgian stallion is an older boy, but he is still game enough to pull a second place for JAB and Arny. Congrats to them.

Specialized Events Announcements TBA

Fun Fact: Log Pulling or just Pulling events are broken down into horses (Belgians are most often seen) for your large draft breeds and draft ponies (Haflingers are most popular). There are even specialized classes for Mules and your miniature ponies!

Driven Dressage

News
The last record for Driven Dressage was broken on August 16th, 2019, by P33♛ Bonifác who is bred by SilverSaddle and owned by panka33.

Just starting out in their Dressage Driving careers; Friesian-Forest Horse stallion The Doodler and Friesian stallion Kaidu Khan have both started their career with win percentages of 100%. It will be interesting to see if these two can keep a high Win percentage as they get further in their careers. Later in their careers are Trakehner stallion 〖RDT〗Russian Enemy and Arabian-Trakehner stallion {MM} Lovestruck Dollar both are maintaining high win ratio out of over 100 events.

For anyone who might be interested in participating in the Driven Dressage events, the evaluated states are Movement, Balance, Strength, Tempo. The horse or pony must be between 9 Inches to 21.3hh to participate.

Horse Spotlight will come from the top placings in the HWO Driven Dressage Spotlight event.
The horse I chose to spotlight is This stunning silver brown cream Trakehner stallion has been doing quite well and holding on to an impressive 99% win ratio in over 100 events. Congratulations to his owner and breeder Fallon.

Specialized Events Announcements TBA

Fun Fact: Driven Dressage is exactly what it sounds like, Dressage in a harness. Singles, Pairs and Four-in-Hand are permitted, though judged separately. Dressage movements may include circles, figures of eight, and crossing the diagonal and all paces – walk, working trot, collected trot, extended trot, canter, a halt, and a rein back.

Marathon Driving
News
Look who decided to show up to break a couple more records in rapid succession. This Belgian stallion incidentally decided he didn't just want a level three record, he wanted a level seven to round his collection out. Congrats again to his deserving breeder and owners.

Here is an overview of Marathon Driving with a few highlighted horses that are going extremely well. Just starting out in their careers are Part Dutch Draft stallion MFI Lars Sanders ♂ and Belgian mare JB Topped With Whipped Honey both with win percentages of over 90%. Further along in their career path are Master Champion Belgian stallions JB Stomping in the Rough and ✂ Nutmeg Clockwise 67|42, both have won over $500,000 in events.

For anyone who might be interested in participating in the Marathon Driving events, the evaluated states are Strength, Stamina, Tempo, Intelligence. The horse or pony must be between 9 inches to 21.3hh tall to participate.

Horse Spotlight will come from the top placings in the HWO Marathon Driving Spotlight event.
The horse I chose to spotlight is Now this was a tough choice and I bounce back and forth between JB Cloud of Neon and his farm mate JB Stomp in the Mud. I finally decided that even though his win ratio was a bit lower, JB Cloud of Neon deserved the spotlight as he was entered into about 100 more events. Congratulations to his owner Arny and Breeder JAB.

Specialized Events Announcements TBA

Fun Fact: Marathon Driving tests the fitness and stamina of the horses, as well as the driver's knowledge of pace, over a course, divided into 3 or 5 sections. The course has obstacles to test the speed and agility of the horses, and the drivers ability. Obstacles may include water, tight twists through trees or man-made obstacles, steep hills, or fences and pens. Drivers are scored on how quickly they can negotiate the obstacle.
Image
Obstacle Driving
News
No new records have been broken. Grade stallion SGCh. Rh 64+ 36* 48* 12 -- 59.37 broke two records for Marathon Driving back to back on June 27th, 2019. He is bred/owned by Bitapetrone.

Just starting out in their careers with 100% win ratios is Gypsy Vanner stallion Prospector and Friesian
stallion Kaidu Khan. There are a few horses like part Quarter Horse Arabian Stallion SL Relic and Belgian stallion My Odyssey Engraving who are rounding out their careers with a 80% win ratio or better.

For anyone who might be interested in participating in the Obstacle Driving events, the evaluated states are Strength, Agility, Stamina, Balance. The horse or pony must be between 9 inches to 21.3hh to participate.

Horse Spotlight will come from the top placing in the HWO Obstacle Driving Spotlight event.
The horse I chose to spotlight is I know, I know, I already spotlighted this horse for Marathon Driving, however the field for both events were very similar. JB Cloud of Neon has maintained a 98% win ratio in over 250 events, including an impressive 218 first places. I do feel this warrants this flaxen gold champagne roan being spotlighted twice. Congratulations to his owner Arny and Breeder JAB.

Specialized Events Anouncements TBA

Fun Fact: In Obstacle Driving the driver must negotiate a course of up to 20 pairs of cones, each cone having a ball balanced on top. Knocking over one or both of a pair of cones adds penalties to the driver's score. The course may also include obstacles made of raised rails in a U or right angle, and a wooden bridge.

I'm wondering if this could be one of the first horses to win the Combined Driving Trials, but really I'm getting ahead of myself, we will need to wait and see. Congratulations to owner Vares and breeder Emiliares.

Fun Fact: Incidentally, I have been binge watching the Mandalorian series all this week. I thought this was so ironic.

The horse I chose to spotlight is Now this was a tough choice and I bounce back and forth between JB Ballroom Blitzer and ∰ Ithilien de Whyle. I finally decided that even though his win ratio was a bit lower at 93%, JB Ballroom Blitzer deserved the spotlight as he was entered into about 40 more events. Congratulations to his owner Arny and Breeder JAB.

Fun Fact: Horses are herbivores, however there are cases where horses have been known to be carnivorous. Horses in Iceland are routinely provided salted fish as a protein and mineral/salt supplement as the native hay is deficient in theses minerals and vitamins.

Trivia
Since, I'm on a Star Wars kick here is a trivia question (please answer here BB's Trivia Contest).
This Months Trivia Question
What was the name and home planet of the former Imperial pilot who led the TIE fighters on a merry chase through the Death Star at Endor?
Last Months Answer
What Corellian family spawned four generation of Jedi? And can you name all four?
There were a couple of very close answers, but the correct answer was
Halcyon Family: Nejaa Halcyon>Valin 'Hal Horn' Halcyon>Corran Horn>Valin Horn or Jysella Horn
The Halcyon (Horn by adoption) family line, spawned four generation of known Jedi in an unbroken line. Jedi Master Nejaa Halcyon was married to Scerra and they had a son named Valin Halcyon, who was apprenticed to Nejaa. Upon his death, Nejaa’s Corellian Security officer partner Rostek Horn, married his widow and adopted his son as his own. Rostek Horn changed Valin’s name to Valin Horn to protect him from the Jedi Purge.
Valin, who most often went by the name Hal Horn, joined the Corellian Security Force and married Nyche and they had a son named Corran Horn. When his son started to imitate him when he was practicing, Hal started to teach Corran the Jedi exercises he was taught by his own father, under the guise they were a private game that they shared. Corran followed the Horn family tradition of joining the Corellian Security Force.
After his father death, Corran on the run from the Imperials, joined the reformed Rogue Squadron and married Mirrax Terrik the daughter of his fathers nemesis Booster Terrik. He eventually accepted the offer to apprentice under Luke Skywalker, he used the guise of Keiran Halcyon, so he wouldn’t distract the other students with his fame. Later he and Mirrax would have a son Valin Horn and daughter Jysella Horn, who eventually would attend the academy.

This year due to Covid-19 pandemic Breyerfest was held online, so we were able to watch videos and live chats with some of the owners about their horses. We were able to catch up with the 2019 Celebration Horse, Oliver. Oliver is a Shire cross gelding who welcomes guests to the Kentucky Horse Park and patrols the world-class equine events held their each year.

My highlight was that we got to meet Gypsy Vanner Stallion, Faugh-a-Ballagh (AKA Cheesecake), which is Gaelic for 'clear the way.' He is owned by WillowWind Stable in Charlotte, Michigan (my home state!). Cheesecake is an Cremello pinto, who has countless Champion, Reserve Champion, and 1st Places in Dressage shows. His owners shared that Cheezy likes peppermint candies and the occasional donuts, though they didn't specify what type of donuts (I’m partial to the giant Apple Fritters found back home). This year, Cheesecake was one of the year's limited edition Breyer Models.

Interview

This month, I was able to get an interview with the amazing Eugene, who has been breeding the most amazing driven dressage and dressage horses!

Why did you start breeding driven dressage horses?

I started breeding driven dressage horses completely on accident. My goal at the time was (and still is) to break the lvl 10 Dressage record, but I entered a couple of horses into DD competitions and they did really well. I'm still not trying to breed driven dressage horses, but since both disciplines use the same stats I keep ending up with them.

Have you done any other breeding projects?

I fiddled around with breeding realistic Arabians for a bit, but that got boring very quickly. After that, I bred some New Forest Ponies. All of the stallions I bred are still around, but around that time I broke a driven dressage record and decided that breeding competition horses was more exciting.

How long have you been breeding your dressage/driven dressage horses? What helped you most?

Since January of 2020 I think. As for what helped me the most, Silverines Discipline Potential Evaluation was super helpful before I got premium. I've since abandoned it in favour of foal testing, but it got me a long way. Besides that, setting very strict standards for all of my horses. At the moment, mares need to have green movement, at least 45 balance conformation, and score over 32% in lvl 10 dressage as a newborn.

So you do foal testing?

Yeah, I usually only train them if they score over 33% and also have good stats. I had a colt once who scored >34%, that was wild. He didn't do well in player-made competitions though, which goes to show that local comps are not always an accurate gauge of skill.

What horse do you think is your best, and why?

This guy, definitely

He never did break any records (though he might if I got him out again) but when he was competing he was always super consistent. He's not 87,000 feet tall, he looks moderately normal, like you could encounter him outside the game and not be scared off.
Idk, I just like him. If not him I would have chosen The Doodler, if only for the name.

What do you want to do when you're done breeding dressage horses?

No idea. I may start on the breed quests, but that project is a little daunting. At this rate beating the record will take me 10 years anyway, so I have lots of time to think about it.

Driven Dressage

News:

On December 15th, [A] Monopolize took the L4 DD record with a score of 56.92%.

Spotlight:

Trakehner x Friesian stallion [A] I Can't Dance is getting some beautiful driven dressage scores, and has a 90% WPS. ~DB4E~ Faithful Oldie also has very good scores in driven dressage, with again, 90% WPS and champion title. 66k/4stat/calm/66-39-38-45 is just a beginner, but he's got scores over 54% and he's only had 7 starts!

[A] Dazzle 'em

This beautiful Friesian x Trakehner stallion is a supreme champion in driven dressage with an 88.5% WPS. He has gotten multiple scores over 56% in driven dressage, but he's also excelling in dressage, obstacle driving, and marathon driving! Dazzle 'em also has gold movement, with a confo of 65.

Log Pull

News:

There haven't been any log pull records broken in the past month.

Spotlight:

Ⓗ Sorcerer's Request is still dominating log pull competitions, and maintaining his great WPS of 97.3%. But Belgian colt Wild Moose is a supreme champion log puller and still has a 100% WPS! Gold Boy Warrior is doing decently in log pull as well. Although he does have a little low WPS, he has some pretty nice scores.

Ⓗ Jennette

This Belgian mare is doing phenomenal in log pull! Not only does she have a 100% WPS, she's probably the best log pulling mare I've ever seen! She has 68 strength (gold) and has some very good scores in log pull. She has 2 offspring, and the only one who is competitive is Ⓗ Jaques, who has only had 5 starts in the discipline, but some amazing scores. His best is 65.14, which is just 1 away from breaking the world records!

Marathon Driving

News:

No new records the past month in marathon driving.

Spotlight:

Ⓗ Jennette is doing very well in marathon driving. She has an 98.7% WPS and a master champion title in the discipline. But Friesian stallion Raindrops and roses is a supreme champion in the discipline with an 89.6% WPS.

Ⓗ Mr. Ford

Last month's rising star, Mr. Ford still has a 100% WPS in log pull, marathon driving, and obstacle driving, and is a master champion in all three disciplines. Not only that, but he has gotten marathon driving scores under 22, which is very close to breaking some world records! Who knows, maybe we'll have some marathon driving news to write about in our January issue!

Obstacle Driving

Friesian stallion Raindrops and roses has an 85% WPS in OD, and is a supreme grand champion. But Ⓗ Jennette has a 96% WPS in the discipline, and a master champion title.

SL Impresario

I don't think I've ever seen a Quarter Horse doing this well in obstacle driving, but this one sure does. Impresario has a 100% WPS in obstacle driving, and is beating some of these well bred Belgians! He has a grand champion title in obstacle driving, and has some really good scores as well!

Rising Star

Ⓗ Jaques

This beautiful Belgian colt has only had 8 starts total, but has very good scores and is close to breaking some records! He has a 100% WPS in all three disciplines, and he is sired by current L3 log pull record holder {LC} The Gold Legacy, and our log pull spotlight, Ⓗ Jennette is his dam.
