Akhal-Teke [Completed 2024-07-18]
Akhal-Teke
The Akhal-Teke horse is an extremely old breed originating from Turkmenistan but also found in Russia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and rarely in Europe and North America. They have been primarily breed as race horses due to their incredible speed and endurance. Many say that the Akhal-Teke is the "greyhound of horses". Believed to be one of the oldest breeds to exist, the Akhal-Teke is a descendant of the ancient Turkmene, and likely related to the Arabian breed as well. The Akhal-Teke shares distinct similarities to the Munaghi Arabian, which was also bred for racing.
Description: They are long and slender throughout their body, giving the appearance of a greyhound dog. Their head is slender with long and wide forehead, long ears, straight face profile, unusually long and muscular neck. The neck is set upon the shoulders fairly upright, while their shoulders are very sloped. Their legs are very long and slim with hard hooves. The croup is sloping with a low-set tail. The mane and tail are very sparse with the mane being very short.
Common Colours: Bay, chestnut, black, buckskin, palomino, perlino, cremello, and grey. White markings are frequent on the legs and head. Their hair often has a particularly striking metallic shimmer.
Common Uses: Racing, endurance, jumping.
Country of Origin: Turkmenistan
Dates of Origin: Thought to be many thousands of years old at least.
Current Status: Rare but no longer endangered.
