I forgot to answer your question about temperament!

Ok, so it depends a bit on how tall the horse is. Bigger horses are way easier to maintain than smaller ones.

If they are at far into the high strung bracket, I'll put them in a pasture on grass and hay or performance mix until they drop to spirited. Then I put themin a barn on 30% Hay, 70% Performance mix. I do local shows with them until they go up to high strung. (Most horses best times will be the last turn before high strung).

At that point, I change the feed to 35% hay, 65% performance mix. This can make smaller horses lose weight, so you have to make up for the loss of weight later. I will do two turns on this feed ratio, then switch back to 30/70 until HS again. I do this repeatedly until I feel I have seen the horse's best speed. Generally six or seven turns for a mare, might be more for a colt---especially if the colt looks like one I might want to train.
