Possible Mohawk Belgian?

Post by Birtwick_Stables »

Wondering why this horse still has it's mohawk as all my foals have lost their baby mane at under a year. Anyone have any ideas? (I think it's great she's kept her mohawk though... I have been wanting to breed high strength/stamina mohawk belgians)

Honestly sometimes it grows out later like 3yrs. :D I had a few horses like that and I was like whatttt. Or it could just be something in their genes, something in their line! It can be so bizarre sometimes! It looks adorable anyway! :D

Remember, mohawk is a recessive gene.

What this means, is that any foal from mohawk parents are guaranteed to be mohawk themselves. It also means that any foal from one mohawk paret is guaranteed to be a carrier.

This also means that mohawks can show up unexpectedly in a line at any time, as long as you have something like a prze as an ancestor, even if it's quite distant.

Your mare looks like a fully-grown-out mohawk. That doesn't mean I can't be wrong, but after seeing a lot of these mohawks around the site, this doesn't look like it's just a still-standing mane. It actually looks like a long mohawk mane.

To add to what Blackoak has said, to the best of my knowledge the mane flopping and tail dropping usually happen at the same time, so once the tail starts growing out of the little baby poof you will know whether or not your horse has a mohawk.
Feathering also usually happens either at the same time as or later than the mane/tail flop. If your horse is growing out feathers or their tail you can assume that the mane (if upright) will be a mohawk.
